Personally always burn at 12x.  Have heard that slightly slower speeds do give better burn quality, though I've heard reports that this isn't always the case with all speeds.  With a 16x drive, 12x isn't actually that much slower (since 16x is actually the peak, and the drive only really exceeds 12x for a short period during a full burn).
8x, because that's the fastest sped my drive can burn.

Nero claims that it can burn 16x, but if I try, it just goes retardedly slow (like 1x or something).
i don't. my dvd drive exploded a few days ago...  until that happened i'd use 4x as that is the most the dvd-rw's is use will go to. I found a great bargain about six months ago. a pack of 50 dvd-rw's  for only £10! normally a pack of 50 would cost £30 upwards. the only drawback was that they're only designed to go up to 4x, and my chocolatety, 6 year old, sony (explains it all), beige excuse for a dvd burner will only let you burn as fast as the disc that's inserted will take. well, now its broken i suppose I'll need to go out and buy a new one...

anyways, it exploded when i was trying to rip an ancient cd that had been left on the dashboard of the car all last summer. Queen - Greatest hits 1. anyways, put it in, all was recognised and it seemed to be ripping fine until...

BANG!

...the cd disintegrated inside the drive as it was spinning. if any of you have seen that mythbusters episode where the put a cd on a 20,000 rpm angle grinder and let it loose next to a ballistics dummy, you get the picture. there wasn't much left of the innards of the drive when i tried to see if it was salvagable... still, at least i have 3 new lasers to play with! apparently some dvd burning lasers are powerful enough to pop baloons! hehehehehe....

:O  I thought that was mainly a thing when 56x+ CD drives were being sold (they seem to have got taken off the market fairly quickly).

Though, when would you need to use 50 DVD-RWs?  Typically I use DVDs as a cheap storage medium, thus only really use DVD-Rs.  Like burning a lot of stuff and giving them out to friends?

Remember this cd was 27 years old (made in 1981 according to the box) and had sat on the dashboard of a car in direct sunlight for about a month before being spun to 7000-ish rpm...

it was cheaper than buying a 50-pack of dvd-r's. was running low and needed some more dvd-r's and saw a pack of dvd-rw's for cheaper. same brand (TDK), same quantity, just cheaper.

EDIT: the spoiler tags don't seem to be working...
