was a bit bored at school so i decided to do a traceroute from school to home, a distance of about 12 physical miles.

the route is as follows:

School, South Wales
Dallas, Texas
New York
London
Rochford, Essex
Home, South Wales.

A total of approximately 9649 virtual miles as opposed to 12 physical ones. Why the stop in rochford? a small town in Essex 35 miles from London? I never realised the internet was so inefficient.
All things seem to like to take the scenic route,

The internet is more optimised for global access, not necessarily local access - that's my guess for the network path you're going through.  Other things include where the ISP is physically located, where the target server is located (relative to everything else) and the connection route the server is connected through.
