Obviously you haven't discovered the Brush Options area...

in Photoshop CS3 at the top right where there are icons lined up vertically - theres one with paintbrushes in a pot - click on that and have a look - you can do a lot more then.

Don't have the text so near the edge and try to do a transparent border of some sort.

Keep at it.
