When i started my PlayStation 3 up two days ago I got a message that said the Hard Drive needed to be rebuilt, so I clicked okay waited a couple of minutes and then everything was back to normal...why it needed to "rebuild" the Hard Drive, i don't know.

Anywhoo, today when I turned on my Playstation the same message popped up, but when I clicked yes it said the Hard Drive needed to be formatted. i didn't want to so i cut it off and cut it back on and it booted up like normal, but as a precaution I started manually backing up all of my videos and music to a USB drive and then transferring them to my computer.

While i was copying files my PS3 kept freezing up every once and awhile causing me to have to start the PS3 over, the "format and rebuild" message popping up every 1 out of 4 times.

So I finally have all of my music and videos backed up.

Can anyone tell me what all of this means and why I am getting this message?

Is my Hard Drive corrupted?

Thanks.
that can't be good ... still under warranty ? ..

let sony bitches fix it :D (although, you might not see it for a few weeks... ... nevermind XD )
actually, if its still under warranty, sony are really good with replacements. my mate had a new one delivered and his old one carted off in 3 days

(luckily, mine hasn't broken yet, so i don't have that problem)

This is my 2nd PS3. My first one stopped playing PS2 games so Sony replaced it.
I backed up all of my vids and music, the game saves aren't any big whoop, maybe I just need to format the HDD. I found out while transferring some files to my computer that some video files were corrupted, so that may be it.

Though I'm going to keep going on about my business if all i have to do is turn off my PS3 and turn it back on to get rid of that message. Then if it blows, I'll let the Sony bitches fix it.Itchingsmile

Oh its happened to me before. The first time I had to send my PS3 in I lost 90 hours of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII play. I didn't touch those games for two years after that.Emptyone

Good plan - cause it sounds like the drive is failing. If
the music might be virused. lol.

I'm sure its a video that was corrupted/virused, but I'm going to call up Sony and see what they say about it.
