My friend (who's family own a business) told me that they wanted to know if there was a way I could set up, so they could work on files on the company PC from there PC at home, first thing I thought of was remote desktop, but will remote desktop let you run programs like Quicken remotely from there home PC remotely? Or will I have to use another program that will allow me to do this type of thing? I have never even used remote desktop or anything like it (other then utorrent webui) so I wnated to get your guys thoughts and see what you think.
yes remote desktop will allow it but you can't use the computer you are "remote desktopping" while the other computer has a hold of it

while using teamviewer, both can use the computer. Remote desktops shuts off all control form the computer being controlled.
but with teamviewer both computers must login, so you would have to always set up the computer at work to login so you could control it form home.
You could also try some sort of vnc.
UltraVNC worked well for me.
