I personally don't really think UMPCs pose much a threat to portable game consoles, just like other MP3 players don't pose too much a threat to the iPod...

"Don't pose too much a threat" in terms of overtaking in popularity, but other MP3 players probably cause a lot of loss of profit for the iPod. And that does matter. A lot.
But game consoles are kinda different, and it's much harder to enter the industry than for MP3s. Because they also depend on 3rd party game developers developing games for them.

entirely invalid imo. A PSP @ the end of the day will remain a simple gaming console with a slow processor w.r.t. to UMPCs. You get a small screen with not the greatest resolution, a disk drive that is practically worthless, no independent USB connectivity and a memory card worth of storage. an ultra basic netbook like Eee PC 700 is far more advanced than a PSP and is not that expensive. As trends are, they might even become relative in price in near future.
Then you decide what you want.. a gaming machine that takes the best of brains to make it do something different or a portable computer?
MP3 players and iPods are fundamentally the same. iPod just does it better, but still they do the same!

You see, as you've mentioned, an iPod is an MP3 player. However, in the minds of most people, it's apparently different - despite there being better value MP3 players out there, the majority of people will still want an iPod. Why?

I still count about 10 iPods to about 1 "other brand" MP3 player being used in general society...

Firstly, 10% is a lot (actually 9.1%). Not something you simply overlook.
(And the ratio isn't really as much as 10:1. Well, that kinda varies depending on your location and social structure, so I won't argue with you on that. Maybe over where you are the iPod has more dominance).
Secondly, your loss will be greater than that 10%, because the competition in the markets will warp your optimal selling price/quantity to something sub-optimal. That is, if there are no other MP3 producers, then you are monopolizing, and you can charge at a price that will get you the most money (higher price = lower quantity sold. There will be an optimal price and quantity leading to the highest profit). Having competition will screw that up (unless you're secretly forming a cartel with your competition or something, which is illegal), so you are actually loosing more money than just the 10% of sales lost to the opponents.

In real life, there's rarely ever a true monopoly, and having a 90% market share is pretty damn good. (assuming that's correct)
Back on topic: I think Sony can market its devices away from UMPCs. I don't think there'll be a PSP2 anytime soon though. They'll try to capitalize on the current gen a bit more I say.
