I was just now playing Facewound when I got a ATI Thermal Warning saying that my x1600xt is above save temperature... so I looked into Catalyst Control Center and holy shizzle it was running a 98°C..... It always was around 80° from the beginning but never close to 90, not to say 100

I've not checked then fan for dust yet but I doubt there's many since I blew everything out a few weeks ago.

I never touched the Overclock option nor did I made any changes to my system except for upgrading the Catalyst Driver to version 8.7 yesterday.

Could it be just a driver fault? My fan always was getting louder if I play Graphics intense games but ever since yesterday this isn't happening anymore, could it be that Catalyst 8.7 has a bug and forgets to send the "Run faster" command to my fan?

Is there any utility to manually set the fan speed to max for ATI cards?

If it's not a software fault I guess I need to replace the card, when the old card of my friend died due to overheating it also took the Motherboard with it, I don't want this to happen with mine....

I thought of buying the HIS HD 4850, GDDR3 512MB, ATI Radeon HD4850, PCIe for 155€ but I would also need a new Power Supply then but I'm confused about them.

I've seen a 600w one with 2 PCI-E connectors and 6+4 SATA, that 6+4 confuses me though, does it mean I have no IDE power connectors or can I "transform" 4 of the SATA ones to IDE? I NEED 4 IDE Power connectors....

Thanks for help in advance! Gongxi
Im not sure if they make power boxes with IDE connectors anymore

maybe china has made an adapter for such a situation?
It's alright with the Powersupply, Sensei told me that what I know under IDE Powerconnector are in fact 4pin Molex connectors and every PSU has them so >.<
Anyway, in regards to it possibly being a driver issue, have you tried rolling back to an earlier version, see if it fixes the issue. But at €155, a 4850 is still a 'borrow', even with a new PSU on top.
this reminds me of a frieds computer. he was complaining to me that his computer was really loud and was turning itself off all the time. sounded like it was overheating. so next time i was over his house i had  a look. i took my trusty computer utility belt (an old piece of car seatbelt with holes in it for my pendrive, various screwdrivers and a pair of pliers) and installed speedfan on his computer. speedfan reported  that his cpu was running at 95 degrees idle and 110 degrees load! Holy freaking spoon! Remeber this is an old AMD Athlon XP 2200 at 1.7 Ghz. the heatsink had come loose over the yaers so i squeezed a little thermal goo under the heatsink and popped it back into place. all was fine for a few months until he pgones me to say that it won't turn on.

when i had a look at it,  it turned out that the psu had failed because its fan had seized up. so i sell him and old psu of mine. that lasted about a week before  that blew up as well. by now his parents are a little annoyed at me because they think i have tricked my friend  into buying duff hardware that he  didn't need. so they take the computer down  to PC World and they fit a new psu. that dies as well within a week so they fit a more powerful one. guess what, that died too.

so far that computer has been through 8 500watt psu's! I've told my friend that he seriously needs to think about getting a new computer (he's a bit of a gamer) especially considering its spec and its hungry appetite for psu's, but, all the psu's are being replaced under warranty so he's not paying for it. every weekend they simply load the  computer up into that car and take it down to PC world  to have a new psu fitted. its as routine  as their  weekly shopping trip.

w.t.f

Something is obviously malfunctioning there..
I confirmed now that it's not a software issue, I set the fan to 100% with Riva Tuner and still get the message.... and also double you tee eff to PSPkiller..... :o
well then, get the 4850, you won't regret it
lmao @ PSPkiller!
