Quote:Fresh speculation concerning the development of a PlayStation-branded phone has reared its head, with Sony insiders reportedly indicating that a new handset modeled on the PSP could launch next year.

According to Marketing Week, Sony is said to be considering launching a PlayStation-branded phone that would incorporate elements of PSP functionality, possibly as soon as Christmas 2009.

The site claims that Sony would likely develop the new phone itself rather than in collaboration with Swedish mobile company Ericsson, which currently manufactures a number of phone handsets that incorporate Sony’s Walkman and Cyber-Shot brands.

One industry source told MW that the relationship between Sony and Ericsson had become “frosty”, while another suggested that Sony had already made up its mind that it would never allow the Swedish firm to use its PlayStation branding.

In November 2007 Sony shot down rumors that a PlayStation phone was in development after SCE’s co-chief operating officer, Jim Ryan, was “misquoted” as saying that convergence between Sony's PlayStation and Ericsson arms to create a console orientated phone was "definitely plausible".

Next-Gen has contacted Sony for comment.

poor shelves, must be painful...
that's great..... with a network set up all the homebrew developers will probably create an app to hack into it......

as for sim cards i dunno......
As long as it'll work with my current AT&T SIM card, and they work out a way to hack it, I'll get it. Sony does have a track record of making AT&T phones in the US, so the first one probably won't be a problem.
There will be a way to hack it. Unless it has the Symbian lock from Nokia phones or something like it......but seeing a you play games on in I'm sure that there will be exploits....
BOLOCKS
so i take it it will be using UMDs?  That makes it big.. like a brick com paired to my phone atm
