Oh, and the PSP does support XviD and DivX - it has since FW 1.00.
Just not the typical video that you download from the internet though.

People are lazy and don't want to convert their videos, the ME chip does not really support XviD and DixX it supports MGEP-4 a generic codec for said codec's if you will. The Hardware decoders can not play x86 formatted XviD and DivX videos that are played on ones PC, the PSP simply lacks the power too do so (including the Slim). 1.00 does play MPEG-4+MP3 videos encoded in 480x***/4 Sony removed 480x***/4 support in 1.5 for some stupid reason. Alex hacked it back in with AVC support in one of the OE's, and Sony then continued to support 480x***/4 and added 720X***/4
hey im trying to get the popsloader to work and sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn't but no matter wat button i hold. L or R. it goes into 3.95 pops which doesn't play the opening movie for Final Fantasy 7
Firmware seems quite interesting as for 4.00 think it would have something big why else would sony be stalling its release for so long
My biggest worry is that any major benefits 4.00 will have will only work on Slim..

unfortunately, this is going to happen sooner or later... to add more stuff, you need more resources. Moreover, PSP 100 series is now defunct. Anyone buying a psp now buys a PSP2000 series... Sooner or later, support for PSP1000 will lessen!

DivX/XviD are not tied to specific CPU architectures, thus "x86 formatted" doesn't make any sense.
The ME does decode DivX/XviD - it's been done (partially) before by homebrew (cooleyes has a sample which will decode a single frame using the ME).
The ME was primarily designed to handle MPEG-4 AVC at 720x480 resolution, but does also handle a variant of MPEG-4 SP.
