Every time you get them tightened - Eating hard foods will be a bitch. I had my braces for about a year and a couple months now. Also, not everything they tell you to not eat, doesn't mean you don't have to eat them. Give it a couple months, and you can eat them. I eat sugarless gum, and peanuts all the time. Just be careful with chewing as you can take the brackets out pretty easily. (And they are off until you get them back on your teeth - Means goes back to dentist for fix)
Also, getting food stuck in there means extra brushing.. My dentist and my mom told me bout this, and if you don't do a good job, those braces comes right off, and they send you to hygiene.
P.S. Prepare for any other painful operations. In my situation, I had to get 2 teeth extracted. (With a saw). Numbing did its job, and I was talkless for 1-2 hours. But, when I was on the way home on the train, the pain started to hurt.. Owww.
