sorry.

well, once again my computer is semi-broken. this time it makes no sense at all. basically what;s happening is one of my svchost.exe is using all of my cpu core0 this is annoying as i can't multitask any more. well, i can but it tends to crash. as well as this the computer is becoming unresponsive. booting takes ages, and occasionally the mouse will act as if the clicker doesn't work while the keyboard continues to work fine. my computer can no longer come out from hibernation successfully and will fail halfway through loading everything back into the RAM. I've tried memory tests and they've all come back fine. the weirdest thing though is this svchost.exe.

in task manager its classed as a network service. i have no internet or network connections on my computer so why its using so much cpu i can't work out. even weirder is if i end the process (i know i shouldn't really, i was only doing it hough to see what would happen) the cpu core0 is still running at 100%. it says so in the performance tab but if i go back to the processes tab, even if i have no other programs going or using any cpu the performance tab still tells me that core0 is running at 100%. what the fudge? the only way i can seem to work around this is to use process explorer to suspend the offending svchost.exe. this stops core0 from being 100% used and i can use my computer normally. but it doesn't stop the mouse from going funny nor does it fix my booting issues. I've scanned for viruses and its all come back clean. (occasionally i take my computer downstairs and hook it up to the interwebs for a few minutes just to get updates for the virus guard and xp, so the virus guard is up to date, i last updated on tuesday).

what's going on. i want my computer back Sadcorner
what the fudge is Virus Guard??

Download both Spybot & Ad-Aware and update them to the latest Definitions and scan your computer to death, report back.

Over use of the SVCHOST.EXE could be because of Malware, Virus, etc. make sure this isn't the case first.

Download, Install and Update the latest NOD32, Trial Version as your not shelling out any cash ATM: http://www.eset.com/download/free_trial_...ad_eav.php

Scan your computer completely.

1) How much RAM do you have?
2) What's your NORMAL Commit Charge? (Find it at the bottom of your Task Manager)

Report back.
My virus guard is nod32. i scanned overnight last night and i came back clean

1Gb of RAM with a 2Gb page file on a separate HDD

Commit charge currently: 253M / 2462M. I don't know what it is normally. what is a commit charge anyway?
The commit charge is the amount of virtual memory that windows is using,

SVCHOST.EXE causing the CPU to run at 100% sounds like the microsoft update problem try to disable the Automatic Update Service (Admin Tools -» Services) and Automatic Updates (Control Panel -» System) to see if it helps,

Bleh Jargon for Total Memory Usage.

Was there any point the computer was in a good state?

If you have your systems XP Disk, backup you most important data and do a REPAIR [not re installation] as it seems like a system file might be corrupt, but this is unusual.

Hmm.

What programs do you have running in the background?
What version of NOD32 are you running? What is your Firewall?

EDIT; Nice tip, hibby
@hibby, auto updates is already turned off because it keeps trying to download the wrong driver for my graphics and pesters me with WGA all the time.

@senseito i think the only time my computer has ever worked perfectly was after installing critical drivers, 5 minutes after doing a clean reinstall a few months back. that's the only time i can remember my computer doing exactly what i wanted when i wanted, and doing it properly.

Already did a backup last night as soon as i noticed strange things happening. i tried doing a repair but i couldn't remember the command. i used the recovery console but couldn't remember the command that checks system files and replaces them if they're corrupt.

Progs in the background: DiskKeeper service, Folder size service (lets me see the sizes of folders in explorer when its in the 'Details' view), Starwind Service (something to do with Daemon Tools i think), egui.exe (nod32), McAffe Firewall, LClock (changes what the clock looks like), graphics card control panel (Matrox.PowerDesk.PDeskNet.exe), Speedfan. I know, rather a lot but I've still got about 1.7G of RAM free.

ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0.621.0 and McAffe Desktop Firewall 8.5
hmm... Exit McAfee Firewall temporarily, and see if it resolves SVCHOST.

If not, try restarting both DHCP Client and DNS Client through Services.

Start >> Run >> services.msc, right click the service and click Restart.

Do you have any Torrent Clients running?

[Don't worry about background processes, I'm running 100 Processes exactly right now]
no differences after restarting the services, and no torrent clients going, no differences after closing the firewall, though i just noticed something.

I've brought my computer downdstairs and its connected to the internet. the svchost has stopped acting up, so i disconnected it temporarily and its eating cpu again. so its only doing this whilst its not connected to the internet. reconnected and its gone back to normal again. strange.

hibby got an idea on this..

it sounds like an Updater is having a problem..
so, what do i need to do?

then again it doesn't really  matter now as xp  is reinstalling on my computer as i type this  from my dads computer. i did a back up of the contents of my  C drive and the system state so  all should hopefully go back to normal except that goddamn svchost. hopefully...Specky
